Schalke: Suspend Boateng, Sam and Hoger after defeat to Cologne

Hoger making himself useful vs Cologne
After Schalke’s 2-0 loss at Cologne yesterday, it has emerged that Sidney Sam, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Marco Hoger have been suspended as a ‘consequence’ for the surprise result.

Schalke’s general manager, Horst Heldt, said that ‘some players are - regardless of contractual arrangements - going to feel the consequences. If a player is not willing to do what we ask, then he will not be at the next training session.’
Since their surprising win at the Bernabeu in March, Schalke have managed just a single win leaving their push for a Europa League spot now on the brink.

Schalke currently sit in 6th with 2 matches to see out the season, but are just 2 points ahead of both Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen.

Midfielder Julian Draxler said the defeat was one of the worst in years. ‘We’re also aware of the anger of our fans. They have reason to be unhappy and vent their hanger. Having said that, we have to get through what’s been a poor season together.’

Despite being one of the highest earners at the club, Sam has started just 7 Bundeslida matches since moving to Schalke. Which begs the question - will anyone notice he’s been suspended?
