United's Van Persie set for Fenerbahce switch

Claims that Robin van Persie being sold in secret have proved to be true — sort of. If we all knew he was being flogged across Europe then it is pretty unlikely that the Dutchman had no idea himself. As early as January of this year, Manchester United were feeling out clubs to see whether they were prepared to pay his high fee.

Van Persie’s agent, Kees Vos, has been in Instanbul over the weekend sorting out negotiations with Fenerbahce - who finished second in the Turkish Super Lig this season, ensuring themselves and RVP a spot in the Champions League next season.

It is understood that former international teammate, Dirk Kuyt, was key to convincing Van Persie of the move. Kuyt moved from the Premier League to Fenerbache in 2012 and has spent the past 3 seasons with the club winning the Turkish Cup, Championship and Turkish Super Cup  while there.

When Louis Van Gaal came to Manchester United he looked set to name Van Persie as his captain after the 2014 World Cup. But whether he anticipated the end of Van Persie’s PL career or simply wanted to maintain the status quo and give the armband to Wayne Rooney, it’s unclear.

To add insult to injury (literally), Van Gaal seemed to favour the misfiring Falcao in key matches last season. Van Persie remained an unused substitute at Stamford Bridge, which saw José Mourinho’s side take the points and go on to win the league just weeks later. While he came on as a sub for Falcao against Arsenal on the 17th of May.

It’s not all sad times for the dutchman. Not only will he keep his rather hefty paycheque but he could have some company as Nani will have his medical at with Fenerbahce today.

Van Persie has struggled since Alex Ferguson left the side, in part due to injury. The 26 goals he scored under Ferguson helped propel the NE side to a 20th league title. While Van Persie has managed just 22 goals in the 2 seasons since.
