Casillas bids a tearful farewell to Real Madrid

The Sincerity of Social Media
Iker Casillas brought his tearful farewell statement to and end today with eloquent simplicity - “c’est fini”. He has spent the last 25 years of his life at the Real Madrid but found himself alone this afternoon as he confirmed the end to an era.

The Spaniard made the difficult decision to leave the club he’s been at since being a spotty teenager to ensure that David de Gea usurps just once this year rather than twice.

The 34 year old is intent on remaining Spain’s number one at next summer’s European Championships and with De Gea’s move from Manchester United almost a given at this point, Casillas was in need of a club that could guarantee him first team football.

Casillas’ statement was infinitely classier than his now former employers may have deserved. Not one person from the club showed up as the goalkeeper through tears said that “during this time we have enjoyed ourselves, shed tears, happiness, laughter, I have felt loved. This club has not only taught me to be a sportsmen but also taught me human values, being, those of respect, camaraderie and humility.”

Although his form may have dipped in recent years, Casillas had more than warranted a send-off similar to the one Xavi received from Barcelona earlier this year. Casillas has helped Real Madrid to 5 La Liga titles, 2 Copa del Rey, 2 Super Cups, 1 Club World Cup and 3 European Championships.
